Sunil Parekh of Parekh Optometries had a vision of developing a network similar to Facebook for Optometrists and Ophthalmologists to be able to share case studies and articles in order to spur innovation and conversation within the optometry community. He approached Big Bear Software to amalgamate his network based idea into a concise and marketable web application. As Senior Graphic Designer at Big Bear, I took over from the original designer from the early stages and built out the branding elements and standards in order to set the tone for the remainder interface. This included a logo and font facing landing page. From this I designed out an in depth registration process that lead to a dashboard overview that linked out to various features in the web application. This included a Case Study Creator feature which housed all case studies created by the user, Profile page to view your posted cases, a survey section to poll your fellow friends, and a live Feed where friends of the user on the Andean Network’s case studies would be published.

The Case Study Creator had very specific requirements in order for a user to create and post a case study. Working closely with Sunil to develop the form and user flow, we were able to split the case studies into two types; General or Grand Rounds case study. These two different types of posts had varying form registration processes including the ability to add a survey. When a user posted a case study, it would appear in their Profile page as well as in the Feed page, similar to a Facebook wall post. Other users of Andean could then comment or answer the Grand Rounds surveys. If a user answered a survey, they would earn a higher ranking within the internal system. This allowed for a user who interacts more frequently with their peers to have their content boosted in terms of visibility on the Andean Network’s feed. I worked closely with the development team to execute the designs and ensure the features were on track to launch. As this is an evolving web app, I designed out for two future phases of feature releases to include a Forum Discussion and threaded commenting.

Working on this project allowed me to see how all parts of a successful project come together. Generally in the past I have worked on a portion of a large project like this. However, in this case I played Project Manager, acting as the liaison between the client and our development team, and UX/UI designer working to turn complex processes into simple interactions. It was amazing to watch as the Andean project came to life, from logo conception to full working web application. By having had such control from start to finish, it allowed me to ensure consistent and effective design throughout to bring the Andean Network brand to life.
